What to Pack for Florida

THE STUFF YOU’LL ACTUALLY BE GLAD YOU BROUGHT

Florida brings the sunshine—and a few plot twists. This is the practical, personal packing guide I wish every first-time visitor had.

Start packing

Before you zip that suitcase…

Florida is beautiful, but it likes to keep you on your toes. A little planning now means a lot less “why did I not bring that?” later.

Let’s make sure you’re ready for all of it.
Intense sun + UVEven when it doesn’t feel that hot.
Surprise rainBlue sky at lunch. Thunderstorm by three.
Humidity + heatYour hair has entered the chat.
Sand everywhereBag. Car. Shoes. Somehow your bed.
Arctic A/CFlorida restaurants believe in extremes.

01 · MY REAL-LIFE METHOD

How I Actually Pack for Florida.

I use my biggest hard-shell suitcase—and with a little ingenuity, I fit two beach chairs with umbrellas, two floaties, shoes, clothes, accessories and my makeup bags inside. Somehow, it still comes in under the airline weight limit. If Sarasota is where you’re headed, pair this packing list with my favorite things to do in Sarasota.

I bring a roomy personal-item bag, too, but I try to leave space in it. That is my souvenir insurance for the trip home.

Portable chairs, shade and floaties for a Florida beach day

FOR THE FULL BEACH DAY

Florida Beach Gear

Chairs, an actual umbrella, floaties, a dependable beach tent and useful extras. I favor pieces that pack down or do two jobs.

My current beach tent has survived far better than the first one—and it has even sheltered a rain-shower nap.
