KEY WEST

The vacation guide for people who want the good stuff.

Sunset sails. Turquoise water. Old Town streets. Key lime pie. Here’s how to turn Key West into an actual vacation — not a checklist.

The Key West trip makes more sense once you know what you’re actually coming for.

THE SHORT VERSION

Key West is a water + Old Town vacation.

It is not the Florida Keys version of Siesta Key. The real appeal is walking historic streets, getting offshore, watching ridiculous sunsets, eating well and letting the island feel a little weird around you.

3–5 DAYS Sweet spot for a first trip
OLD TOWN Best default home base
ONE BOAT DAY Minimum. Seriously.
CAR OPTIONAL If you’re staying walkable
PICK YOUR KEY WEST

What part of the trip are you most excited about?

Pick the mood first. Then book the thing that actually matches it.

Sunset catamaran sail in Key West
IF YOU BOOK ONE THING

A sunset sail is hard to beat.

Mallory Square gives you the classic sunset. A sail gives you open water, a drink in your hand and Key West glowing behind you.

Turquoise Key West sandbar excursion
FOR THE WATER YOU SAVED ON PINTEREST

This is where Key West gets stupidly blue.

Shallow turquoise water, sandbars, boats and several hours where absolutely nothing important needs to happen.

5 HOURS SANDBAR WATER DAY
SEE THE SANDBAR SAFARI →
Snorkeler over a tropical reef
BEST MORNING ON THE WATER

Reef first. Mimosas after.

Start the day offshore instead of standing in a breakfast line. Snorkel, sail back toward Key West and still have most of the day left.

3 HOURS SNORKEL BREAKFAST

Traveler watching sharks in turquoise water
FOR THE WILDLIFE PERSON

Go see what lives out there.

Swap one more Duval Street drink for a wildlife cruise focused on sharks and marine life in the waters around Key West.

IF EATING COUNTS AS AN ACTIVITY

Walk around. Learn stuff. Eat stuff.

A food tour works especially well early in the trip because you get history, local context and a head start on what you want to eat again later.

3 HOURS FOOD OLD TOWN

WHERE TO STAY

Pick what you want outside your door. Then the neighborhood makes sense.

Key West is small, but these areas do not give you the same trip. Here is the first-timer version: what each area feels like, what is nearby, and which of my hotel picks actually fits there.

QUICK ORIENTATION
WEST / OLD TOWN Mallory · lower Duval · Seaport
CENTRAL / SOUTH OLD TOWN Hemingway · upper Duval · Southernmost area
EAST New Town · airport · Stock Island beyond
I WANT TO… Walk almost everywhere

Old Town

The historic core and the easiest first-trip default. This is the broad area that holds Duval, Hemingway, Mallory, the Seaport and most of the places first-timers picture when they think “Key West.”

NEARBY Duval Street Hemingway Home Butterfly Conservatory
WHERE: The western historic half of the island; the other Old Town areas below sit inside or along this broader zone.
I WANT… Sunset + nightlife right outside

Lower Duval / Mallory

This is the western end of Old Town where Duval meets the Gulf. Stay here when you want Mallory Square, bars, restaurants and the sunset scene within an easy walk — and you do not mind more energy around you.

NEARBY Mallory Square Lower Duval Historic Seaport
WHERE: Far west end of Old Town, around the Gulf end of Duval Street and Mallory Square.
I WANT… Boats + waterfront energy nearby

Historic Seaport

The harbor side of Old Town. This is the better fit if your ideal morning starts around marinas, waterfront restaurants and boats heading out for the day, while keeping the rest of Old Town walkable.

NEARBY Key West Bight Waterfront dining Boat departures
WHERE: North side of Old Town along the harbor, east of the Mallory / lower-Duval pocket.
I WANT… Quiet + central without feeling removed

Truman Annex

A calmer pocket on the southwest side of Old Town. It makes sense when you want easy access to the historic core but would rather come home to something quieter than the middle of Duval.

NEARBY Fort Zachary Taylor Truman Little White House Mallory Square
NEARBY PICK The Gardens Hotel → Lush, romantic and quieter-feeling while still keeping Old Town walkable.
WHERE: Southwest edge of Old Town, between the historic core and Fort Zachary Taylor.
I WANT… Quieter nights + south-end sights

Upper Duval / South Old Town

Still Old Town, but farther from the Mallory end. This works well if you want the Southernmost area, a calmer night and more breathing room without giving up walkability altogether.

NEARBY Southernmost Point Butterfly Conservatory South Beach
WHERE: Southern end of Old Town around upper Duval, Simonton and the Southernmost area.
ALSO WORTH KNOWING

New Town + Stock Island

Look here if saving money, finding more space or having easier parking matters more than walking out your hotel door into Old Town. You’ll be farther from the historic core, so expect to rely more on rides or a car.

MORE SPACE POSSIBLE VALUE LESS WALKABLE

Clear turquoise water and rocky shoreline in Key West
THE BEACH TRUTH

Beautiful water. Smaller beaches.

You can absolutely swim, snorkel and spend a beach day here. Just don’t arrive expecting miles of soft Gulf Coast sand.

The biggest visual payoff in Key West usually happens offshore.

BEST BEACH DAY

Fort Zachary Taylor

Clear water, rocky shoreline and one of the stronger places to spend an actual beach day.

MORE TRADITIONAL

Smathers Beach

The easier choice when what you want is a recognizable beach setup.

BEST WATER

Get offshore.

Sandbars, snorkeling and boat days are where the Keys really start showing off.

Key lime pie at a colorful Key West cafe
WHAT TO EAT

Key lime pie is the obvious part. Don’t stop there.

Key West is made for an afternoon built around Cuban coffee, seafood, tropical drinks and one waterfront meal where you keep looking past your plate at the view.

KEY LIME PIE The assignment.
FRESH SEAFOOD You’re on an island.
CUBAN COFFEE Useful after Duval.
WATERFRONT DINNER Because atmosphere counts.

01
HOME BASE

Choose where you want to wake up.

Old Town if walking and atmosphere matter most. Go farther out when quiet, space or resort time wins.

02
WATER DAY

Protect one day for the reason you came to the Keys.

Sandbar, reef, wildlife or Dry Tortugas. Book it before the rest of the itinerary crowds it out.

03
SUNSET

Choose one evening you care about.

Mallory Square for the classic ritual. Sunset sail when you want the bigger vacation moment.

04
WHITE SPACE

Do not book the personality out of the trip.

Leave time for Old Town, a long lunch, a second slice of pie or whatever looked better than the plan you made at home.

WHEN TO GO

When should you go to Key West? Depends what you’re chasing.

There isn’t one perfect month for everybody. Pick the version that sounds most like your trip.

YOU WANT THE NICEST WEATHER

December–March

The easiest weather window — with peak-season crowds and prices to match.

YOU WANT THE SWEET SPOT

April–May

Warm and tropical, with a little distance from the biggest winter rush.

BEST BALANCE
YOU CAN HANDLE THE HEAT

June–August

Hotter, wetter and more humid — but possible value can make the trade worth it.

YOUR PLANS CAN FLEX

September–November

Potential value, with more reason to watch tropical weather and booking policies.

!
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. If you’re booking in that window, flexible reservations and a closer eye on forecasts are worth it.
IF YOU HAVE THREE DAYS

Enough structure. Still feels like vacation.

DAY ONE

Meet Key West.

Old Town → Duval Street → Historic Seaport → Key lime pie → Mallory Square sunset.

DAY TWO

Get on the water.

Snorkel, wildlife or sandbar excursion → pool / nap → dinner → sunset sail.

DAY THREE

Pick your favorite version.

Hemingway + butterflies, Fort Zach, or make Dry Tortugas the entire day.

SAVE ONE SUNSET FOR THIS

Mallory Square is pure Key West.

Performers, artists, sailboats offshore and a whole waterfront stopping long enough to watch the sky do its thing.

KEEP PLANNING

The Key West collection starts here.

YOU HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION NOW

Fuck it. Book Key West.

Pick the hotel. Put something on the water on the itinerary. Save room for pie.
